Appearance Matters

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Picture this:

You hear this on television. “We are totally committed to getting this done. This is one of the most important things we have attempted.”

You are intrigued. You turn and look at the TV expecting to see the spokesman for some innovative company or from the government.

But instead you see a man in Bermuda shorts and sandals.

You are so thrown off that you immediately stop listening, you find yourself staring at how the guy looks instead of listening to what he’s saying.

Does appearance matter?

Yes.

And it is a very important part of your success.

Another example:

You see a job posting that fits you perfectly. You apply and the strength of your application gets you an interview.

You are so confident that the job is yours that you don’t dress like you think the interview is important. The interview does not go well.

What happened?

The guy who was hungry got the job.

Why?

Because he prepared, and, as part of his preparation he took the time to make sure his appearance matched the needs and desires of his prospective employer.

Your appearance will make people take you seriously.

Or…

Your appearance will make people think you are a joke.

Your appearance will make people think you are important.

Or…

Your appearance will make people think you are incompetent.

Get the point?

While appearance is not everything, it can make whatever it is you are doing easier by creating the right image.

A major part of your presentation is how you appear to the people you are with.

Your job is to make sure that you create the best possible image.

Do some research, don’t show up looking you just fell out of bed.

Once you get the job you will have plenty of time to show people that you are more than the way you look, but until you prove yourself you must always appear how you want people to see you.
