Need To Know

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

Ok, video blog is on hold for now, so back to the old standby, words on a page!!!

What do you need to know?

What does your audience need to know?

Can you answer those questions without hesitation?

If not, then you need to do some thinking before you present.

Here’s why.

If you get up on stage and don’t know what to say, well, you can fill in the obvious blank.

If you get up on stage and speak and at the end of it your audience doesn’t have a clue as to what they were supposed to take away from it, there is no way to gauge if it and you were successful.

On the other hand, if you get up and demonstrate a command of your material, there will be no blank to fill in.

If you speak and your audience has a crystal clear idea of what you were speaking of then you can say you had a successful experience.

What’s the real point here?

Its one I’ve spoken of before.

Actually, now that I think about it, it’s two…

Prepare and practice.

Prepare. As always, if you take the time beforehand to carefully plan and construct your speech your chance of success will be that much greater.

Practice. Once again, preparation will only get you so far. You never maximize your success by trying to remember what you need to say without ever practicing it.

Prepare. If you don’t, you WILL NOT succeed!

Practice. If you don’t you WILL NOT succeed!

So before your next presentation sit down and make a list of what you need to know and then make another list with everything your audience needs to know.

Combine those lists and then…

Prepare.

Practice.

Then, and only then can you be sure that the need to know is satisfied.
